Name Me

My school is now having an English Corner every Saturday and I'm the person in charge of the weekly programme. Hmm.... I'm not an English teacher so I don't know why I was tasked to do it. No choice I guess. Although the English Corner is only 2 hours each time, but the preparation is much more than that. I am the one to buy the refreshments, the one to think of activities, the one to conduct the activities and I'm also the one to clean up after everyone has left. Sometimes I feel it's like 'sai gang'. Bah! It is basically a one-woman show, if you ask me.
Only redeeming factor of the English Corner is that I get to meet students and I'm so amazed at their enthusiasm to speak good english. It is heartening to see them try so hard to pronouce their words and make sure that each sentence they say to me is grammatically correct. Every once in a while, these kids will come up to me and ask me to give them an english name. I take that as a compliment because one does not just ask any Tom, Dick or Harry to name them. There are plenty of English names around but I realise now how important it is to give these kids an appropriate name and one that suits their personality (also one which they can pronounce correctly). It is almost like naming my own baby!
