Big Buddha Head

I also had a chance to climb the 大佛头山 or Big Buddha Head Mountain. The climb was strenuous and the mountain is almost like 80° to the ground. I've really got to heave myself up to the next level. Good thing my new friend, Liu Chen (刘琛), was there to help me. Liu Chen is actually Jonathon's good friend. He's my good friend now! There are just some people whom I can instantly click with, and Liu Chen's one of them.

You all know I'm not very fit, so being able to climb this mountain is no mean feat to me! I met this cute Pekingese when I reached the top! So cute! So adorable! So obedient! Mouth so dirty too! I want my own dog!

Bao tu, bao tu

Before I left Jinan, I visited the Bao Tu Quan (趵突泉). Jinan is well-known for its springs and this place is the best spring or No. 1 spring in China. Why the name? When the water emerges from underneath the ground, it supposedly makes the bubbling ‘bao tu, bao tu’ sound. But I heard no such sound when I visited the spring. Probably because of the large number of chirpy and exuberant Chinese tourists around me. But the water was very clear and looked really fresh. I didn't have a chance to drink the Bao Tu Beer when I was in Jinan though. There's always the next trip!

Dumplings

I love the dumplings here in China as they are 皮薄馅多. I had a lesson on dumpling making last weekend! It was fun and I think I'm not too bad at the craft!

My Angels

They are pretty. They are intelligent. They are gungho. They are good friends. They are my version of Charlie's angels. But no way do I want to be Charlie! I'm just proud to say that I'm their teacher! But I guess their parents should be the ones feeling proud!

Words of wisdom, statement of truth

"Maybe I'm too practical... that's why love eludes me..."

I hope love comes to YOU soon. (You know who YOU are!)

New Life...

When I showed this photo to my Chinese students, all they looked at were the ice-cream that Wei Ping and I were having. They are missing the big picture! Look at the glow on Wei Ping's face! She's such a happy mother-to-be! I can't wait for her baby girl to come into this world. She's one of my closest friends and I feel so excited for her! Well, it's not very often that you get a good friend who is pregnant!

Spike D... Ouch!

I must say sorry to gf #2.... I owe you this one.... So I shall put your photo up BIG BIG as compensation! Opps, then I must say sorry to gf #1, whom I'm sure is upset that her photo has been blown up.... Well, I can't please everyone, can I? Who's gf #1 and who's gf #2? Go figure!

As the title of this blog goes, this post is all about Spike D. Who? Look at the photo above, Spike D is the hemisphere-shaped chocolate cake closest to me. Why the name Spike D? Cos the interior of the cake is filled with durian! It's yummy! Go try the cakes at the Big O Cafe at Wheelock Place. Spike D and Aphrodite (the heart-shaped one) are good, but the cheese cake is only so-so. So much so that I don't even remember it's name!

Pretty Dresses

I love dresses because:
1. they give the illusion that I'm slim.
2. there is no need for mix-and-match. Just throw on a dress and I'm ready to go! Perfect for mornings when I'm late for work!
3. Friend N says I look good in dresses. The fashion police in him told me never to wear dungerees.... Just stick to dresses!

Look at the dresses I got in China! Which would you like to see me in when I next meet you?
My sissy loves polka dots and so do I!!! I scoured high and low for No.1!
What a sweet flirty dress No. 2 is!
No. 3 is a cute bubble dress!
Elegant lace details on No. 4! Feminine yet girlish!
Versatile No. 5! Just change the belt to create a different look!

Money Money Money

Thursday, 6 July
Belinda ordered a soccer jersey for her sister. Her sister wanted the Portugal jersey without any player number so the shop had to bring it in specially for her from another place. The boss said it could be collected in 3 - 4 days time. She paid for the jersey in full.
Monday, 10 July
Belinda and I went down to the shop but the boss said the jersey had not arrived. We lied and said that we were leaving the country this coming Sunday. We must have the jersey by Saturday.
Saturday, 15 July
Belinda and I went down to the shop again. The boss was not there. The staff informed us that the jersey did not arrive and even if it did, it would carry a number. So they tried to make Belinda take the one with a number. But that was not what her sister wanted, so she said no. She told them that since they couldn't fulfil their side of the promise, they should return the money back to her. The staff said they couldn't make that decision and so we demanded they call the boss and we speak with him.
On the phone with the boss, Belinda got really mad and started shouting,"我只要我的钱,我什么都不要!你把我的钱还给我!" She repeated this almost 5 times or more and they came in a crescendo, each time louder than the previous! The boss probably didn't know what to do and relented. She got her money back and she vowed never to enter that shop again!
What's funny about this whole episode is that Belinda is actually half Indian. Hence her Mandarin in normal daily conversation is like my spoken Hokkien. One word to describe it: BAD. Normally when we go shopping, I'm the one asking for the price and doing the bargaining. But when she got really fired up that day, she suddenly spoke fluent Mandarin!

New Friends

Life is not so lonely over here in Jinan because I've made some new friends! The one I'm closest to has got to be Belinda who's a fellow Singaporean. We clicked the moment we met, despite our 10-year age difference. But age is just a number, isn't it?

She's so sporting to allow me to take a photo of her while she relaxes her eyes with some fake cucumber pieces. She's also a great shopping kaki! She loves to shop about just as much as me, so these days, we would spend our evenings and Sundays at the mall. Belinda's boyfriend is a coach from the S-League and he is also a freelance referee. So whenever we go shopping, she would look out for referee jersey for him, but it's almost impossible to find one! We haven't had much luck. Soccer jerseys are plentiful, but not referee jerseys.

Next is Jonathon who is an American. We share the workload for the oral English class. He has been in Jinan for about 8 months already and he is able to speak and write in Chinese. What amazed me most was when I received a text message from him in Mandarin! Perhaps some credit has to be given to his Chinese girlfriend. Prior to China, he was living in Japan and he speaks excellent Japanese too! Some people are just so blessed to be able to pick up languages fast. His favourite catchphrases are 'Terrible!' for anything bad and 'Sweet!' for anything good. True enough, he's really sweet. On my birthday, he actually bought me a chocolate cake and a green tea cake. But on seeing the double layered cake that my boss prepared for me, he kept the cake till the next day for me.

Dressed in pink is Cornelia who's from Switzerland, but she has been living in Singapore for the past 5 years. She does not know what Hokkien Mee and Char Kway Teow are! How can anyone who has lived in Singapore for 5 years not know what those are??? She doesn't even know how to speak Mandarin except for 谢谢!

And to say that she is computer illiterate is the understatement of the year! I pity Belinda who stays next door to her and is like her personal helpdesk. Not one day goes by without her having problems with her computer. When we first came, she exclaimed, “There is no wireless in this hotel! That means I cannot use the internet!” Belinda and I just rolled our eyes at each other. Another time: “Why is my internet not working, Belinda?” You didn't even plug in the cable, duh! One more: “My laptop could not shutdown last night, so I unplugged it and let the battery die off.” Need I say more?

One other thing that Belinda and I could not figure out is why Cornelia thinks that all the Chinese men whom we had dinner with on my birthday are lechers. Those men are big shots who work for the government; one of them is my brother Sun who is the second secretary to the ambassador of England (or something like that). She refused to go with us to karaoke after my birthday dinner because she says that all they want is to have sex with us! I almost fell off my chair when I heard that! Belinda and I concluded she must have had some bad experience before with a married man. We also came to the conclusion that she has a crush on Jonathon. Other than that, she's a friendly lady who loves to chat!

The other 2 are my colleagues from China. Zhou Ting is a lovely and sweet young lady who is being harassed daily by Cornelia for computer problems in school. The last is Mr Wang Dong Fu, or we call him Mr Wonderful. He is like an old friend to me already because we knew each other from my last trip to Jinan. He got married 4 days before I arrived in China! His bride has the same first name as me!

A Year Older...

I went into class on my birthday and was greeted by the whiteboard above. The kids here can be so sweet! In fact, I celebrated my birthday in true chinese style. Lots of wine (56% alcohol!), beer and 干杯. The funny thing about the birthday dinner was that my boss actually booked 2 tables in a restaurant and invited all his staff to celebrate my birthday for me. I've never even met some of them before! I felt like I was at some mini wedding banquet! I was the bride without a groom! Plus I had a two-layer cake! The first ever in my entire life!

Work Work

I expected to be working a lot when I came over to China, but I didn't think that it would actually be THAT much... I teach for 6 hours everyday except for Sunday! In fact, I was supposed to be working on Sunday as well, but the boss decided to give me and the students a break. I'm already halfway through this assignment, so I shall bear with the remaining 14 days!
When I first started the class, there were only about 30 plus students.... A very comfortable number. But right up to today, the number has skyrocketed up to 80 over! I'm no longer conducting a class, but more like a lecture! I've never taught such a big group of students before and it is really difficult to get everyone's attention. Previously I would use the white board for teaching, but with so many people, those sitting at the back could not see what I was writing. (don't forget that my board handwriting is adjusted to our Singapore classroom size) Thank goodness the classroom has a projector and microphone, so I now connect my laptop and use it for teaching. The only problem is that all my teaching materials are not on soft copy! So every night before my next class, I would be sitting in my hotel room, typing away......
Yes that's my life here in Jinan.... Which explains my long absence from my blog.... I haven't even been shopping much since I came!!! How can?!?!?!
